8 Tips For Successful Study Time Management

Studying for success
Studying is an essential part of a students life necessary for success.
The following tips will help you study in a more efficient manner.
  1. Study in small time blocks instead of long time period e.g. study/work in 60 minutes blocks and take frequent 10 minutes break in between, rather than study for 2-3 hours straight.
  2. Reward yourself after you complete a task. This can be by taking a cold drink or doing anything you like for leisure like listening to music.
  3. Motivate yourself to study. Dwell on success, not on failure.
  4. Try to study in small groups rather than in large groups.
  5. Break large assignments into smaller tasks.
  6. Keep a reminder schedule and checklist and set realistic goals.
  7. Modify the environment where you study by eliminating or minimizing noise. Ensure adequate lighting and have necessary equipments at hand.
  8. Don't get too comfortable when you are studying. A desk and straight-back chair is usually best (a bed is no place to study). Be neat! Take few minutes to straighten your desk. This can help reduce daydreaming.

ASUU strike: Lecturers, students to return to classes in one week - Minister of Education

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has said that the ongoing ASUU strike will end in one week

ASUU had on Monday 14 embarked on indefinite strike.

But after the meeting, both sides said there was tremendous progress following offers made by government and position of the union on the new offers.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, on Thursday August 17 said the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities may be called off within one week.

ExamsNG gathered that the minister stated this at a meeting of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund in Abuja.

He said that the ministry and other major stakeholders were already holding meetings with the union to resolve some of the issues that led to the strike.

He assured that with the level of progress made in the negotiation, there was hope that students and lecturers would return to classes within one week.

“The issue of renegotiation is already going on. I have already written a letter formalising the meeting I had with the union because I went alone to face them and I wrote a letter which I gave them yesterday.

“From the way they received it, I think it is possible that the strike will be called off within a week, maximum,’’ he said.

Adamu said while explaining reasons for the strike, ASUU accused the Federal Government of failing to keep its side of the agreement.

He assured that the Ministry of Finance had agreed to do the needful with regard to releasing funds as soon as possible.

“The union had asked for N23bn to be paid.
“We said the condition for that N23bn to be released was for them to account for the N30bn they had taken which is a total of N53bn and they were not able to account for it.

“The Minister of Finance then undertook to do the audit from the ministry and we agreed that the result will be known within six months.

“The Federal Government undertook to be paying them N1.5bn each month during the time they are waiting for the outcome of the audit.

“Their grouse now is that the forensic audit promised by the minister of finance has not been done and the money promised has not been paid.

“So, at our meeting two days ago, we agreed that we will pay them and do a forensic audit on the entire N53bn.

“I wrote to the minister and she has already approved it and this money will be paid; probably on Monday, they will be able to receive the cheque,’’ he said.

Adamu, however, stated that his ministry did not agree on some issues during the meeting with the union.

He said: “There are other issues which we did not agree on and that is their request to be taken out of Treasury Single Account.
“I told them that it is not possible because this is a new policy and government is not going to change it for anyone.

“Concerning their salary shortfall, we said a lot of the reasons spring from what they are doing wrong. They do a lot of employment without proper authority.

“For instance, a university can decide to recruit 50 people and IPPIS is not aware. So, we insisted that institutions must stop doing that and they accepted.

“There is also the issue of the registration of their pension commission. I think they have one or two issues to iron out with PENCOM and I believe they will also be able to solve the problem within a week.’’

The Chairman of the Senate committee, Sen. Barau Jibrin, said the committee was impressed with the briefing by the minister on the matter.

He explained that the seriousness of the issue made the committee members cut short their recess, and said that from the assurance given by the minister, students and lecturers would return to school shortly.

Jibrin said: “We hope the proposal sent to ASUU by the minister will be accepted.
“On our part, with regard to getting some of the issues captured in the budget, we will do our best to actualize it.”(NAN)

Meanwhile, ExamsNG had previously reported that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may soon call off the strike action it embarked upon on Monday August 14 if the Senate is able to convince the union on its demands.

Best Student in WAEC Exams Rewarded on Twitter

The best student has nine A1s in the just concluded West Africa Examination exams.

Best waec student
Apart from the bants and counter-bants that exemplify Twitter Nigeria, there is also a justifiable degree of reward system on the microblog.

This sense of reward was recently exhibited as Nigerians on Twitter proudly honoured Ali Cynthia Chinecherem, a 17-year-old student of Shalom Academy, Nsukka in Enugu State who had the best result in the just concluded West Africa Senior Secondary School Certificate Examinations.

Ali in her WAEC exams got nine A1s and became an instant celebrity on Twitter, as many Twitter users celebrated the academic achievement of the young girl.

The good moment all started for Ali when a user shared her results on twitter and asked Nigerians to urge Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu to send her to a very good University.

In no time, the tweet became a campaign to support the young girl's academic dream as Nigerians proudly offered her textbooks, cash, scholarship and mentorship.

According to Konbini, 31 Twitter users pledged N525,500; and 23 already made good on their pledges, remitting N425,500 in less than one week.

When asked about her reading habit the young genius said, ‘ ’I have no specific study hour because most times I study until I get tired and often fall asleep.”

She added that her parents contributed to her academic success.

“My Dad and Mum contributed greatly to my academic success, because they encourages and grooms me.  My father is a Civil Servant who paid my school fees and try everything possible to see that I will make it in this life academically.’’

Nigerians on Twitter have again shown that they are not on the social media platform to bant but to also support and reward hardworking Nigerians.

Boko Haram Suicide bomber kills 14 in Borno village

– A suicide bomber killed 14 people in Borno, the state emergency agency said on Saturday, in an attack that bore the signs of Boko Haram, days after a resurgence in the jihadist group’s activities prompted a shift in military tactics.

The attack in the town of Dikwa in Borno state came days after suspected members of the group kidnapped an oil prospecting team, prompting a rescue bid that ended in the deaths of at least 37 people including members of the team and rescuers from the military and armed vigilantes, officials say.

Three kidnapped members of the oil team appeared in a video seen by ExamsNG on Saturday, which was provided by suspected members of the militant group.

Boko Haram, which seeks to create an Islamic state in the northeast, has  increased the rate of attacks in the last few months. The insurgency has killed 20,000 people and forced some 2.7 million to flee their homes in the last eight years.

A suicide bomber detonated the explosives in Dikwa on Friday night, after entering a building housing people who had previously fled the insurgency and since returned, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) said.

“We have so far evacuated 38 victims comprising 14 dead and 24 injured”, said SEMA spokesman Bello Dambatta. Dikwa is around 90 kilometres east of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state.

The attack brings the number of people killed by insurgents in northeast Nigeria since June 1 to at least 113.

After the kidnapping of the oil workers, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday sent military chiefs to the northeast to help regain control of the situation.

The move was a change of tactics since the government and military have repeatedly said Boko Haram – which also carries out cross-border attacks in neighbouring Cameroon and Niger – was on the verge of being defeated.

Sahara Reporters states that 3 kidnapped lecturers on an oil exploration in the Lake Chad Basin are dead.

Over 30 people have been reported dead in the death toll following the ambush by Boko Haram in Borno state.

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents kidnapped 10 members of a research team from the north-east on Tuesday, July 25.

Online newspaper, Sahara Reporters, has reported that 3 lecturers from the University of Maiduguri and three others on an oil exploration team in the Lake Chad Basin are dead.

ExamsNG gathered that no less than 12 soldiers in an earlier report were killed while at least four out of 12 staff of the University of Maiduguri equally lost their lives.

The names of the deceased are: Dr Militus Joseph from Geology Dept, Idris Abubakar Njodi and Dr Daniel Birma of Dept of Soil Science.

Daniel Millitus, a relative of the deceased (Dr. Joseph Millitus), said that the family was still in grief over the loss of one of its “rising stars,” and has started making arrangements for the burial, The Punch reports.

Another relative of a slain lecturer (Dr. Manaja Uba), said the family was still in shock and found it difficult to believe.

She lamented that Yusuf Ibrahim another relative who was also on the exploration team, was still missing.

The victims were abducted near a village called Jibi in Gubio local government area on Tuesday, July 25, while moving alongside some personnel of the Civilian-JTF.

A day after the abduction, the Nigerian army in a press statement on Wednesday, July 27, by its spokesman, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, claimed that all the NNPC staff abducted in the Tuesday’s ambush had been rescued.

However the minister of state for Petroleum, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, has said he can't confirm if any of the recently abducted 10 staff of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) have been rescued.

JAMB Reduces Exam Time And Questions, Questions To Be Uploaded 5 Mins To The Exam

The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, had on Wednesday said that the board may reduce the time for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) from three hours to two hours.

Likewise, Use of English that used to have 100 questions will be reduced to 60 questions while the other subjects will be reduced to 40 questions each.

He went further to state that question papers will now be uploaded five minutes to the examinations in order to check and prevent malpractice and questions leakage.

He made this known to the public during the Strategic Planning retreat on Supervision and Evaluation of 2017 UTME examinations.

He said: “As for the 2017 UTME, it is likely we reduce the duration of the examinations. We are looking at two hours for the examinations instead of the present three-hour timeline. This is in line with international best practices.

“As for the candidates, for their age, the maximum time they can sit for examinations is two hours. Even in terms of international standard, for primary school pupils, the maximum time for examinations is between 45 minutes and one hour.”

He said JAMB has embraced new technology which will make the UTME Exams comfortable to write by students in privileged environment and those in rural areas.

He equally confirmed that about 300,000 candidates may likely sit for the mock UTME examinations on April 8 which will be used to test run its new technology to make its examinations easier for students.
